About Jerome's List

This website is intentionally minimalist. It is a tribute to Craig Newmark, founder of Craigslist. It began in 1995 as an email distribution list sharing San Francisco events with friends, evolving into the website craigslist.org by 1996. It expanded to other categories like jobs and housing, then to locations across the US and 70 countries.

Newmark has resisted major modernizations, keeping Craigslist's with the same bare-bones look since the 1990s, though it added mobile scalability. He stepped away from day-to-day operations in 2000, handing CEO duties to Jim Buckmaster, who still leads.

Newmark turned down massive buyout offers—estimated up to $11 billion, retaining a majority stake (over 80% as of recent estimates). No sources confirm a current board role; he retired from Craigslist around 2018 to focus on philanthropy.

Through Craig Newmark Philanthropies, founded in 2015, he donates heavily to journalism, veterans, and cybersecurity, with hundreds of millions given since.
